Okay, let’s take a step back. A “hashtag” on Twitter are word(s) preceded by a pound sign (#). Its purpose is to label each tweet according to specific topics and events. For example…

In the picture above you can see that we used a PPC (pay-per-click) and SEM (search engine marketing) hashtag to denote that we were talking about those two topics in our tweet. A tweet is limited to 140 characters, so it’s important to have an easy way to group and categorize your tweets.

For other users, this functionality is important because it allows people to easily discover new tweets outside their group of followers. So for business professionals using Twitter it’s important to pick a popular hashtag and provide quality tweets and links because the more you discuss and add to the conversation, the more you brand and gather a following of your own.
